Long before the Uchiha Clan is born, the powerful Otsutsuki family harnesses Chakra and develops Ninshu, Ninjutsu's predecessor, as the godly beings that give life to what becomes the Shinobi world of Naruto. After Indra Otsutsuki severs his relationship with his brother, Asura Otsutsuki, he becomes the progenitor of the Uchiha Clan and its trademark Kekkei Genkai — the Sharingan. Asura wields his father's Sage of Six Paths power and his formidable Wood Release Jutsu, becoming the forefather of the Senju and Uzumaki Clan bloodlines that rival the Uchihas.

The Uchiha Clan Maintains an Ancient Rivalry With the Senju Clan

Several generations before the events of Naruto, the Uchiha and Senju Clans are central to the devastating historical period known as the Warring States Period. Although Madara Uchiha is the most well-known and influential historical figure from his prolific bloodline, the vengeful rivalry between the Uchihas and Senjus begins with his father. Tajima Uchiha and Butsuma Senju fight as the leaders of their respective clans during this period, instilling the drive for revenge that would live on in their sons in battles to come.

After losing three sons while fighting the Senjus, Tajima Uchiha tries to get revenge by killing Butsuma Senju's son, Tobirama. Tobirama's older brother, Hashirama, saves him from Tajima's attack. Hashirama challenges Madara, but the Uchihas concede and retreat. The Senju Clan gets revenge for the attempt on Tobirama's life by killing Tajima's other son, Izuna Uchiha. The Uchihas Influence Events That Set the First Great Ninja War Into Motion

When the Hidden Leaf Village and the other of the Five Hidden Villages are established, First Hokage Hashirama Senju distributes the nine Tailed Beasts at the first Kage Summit to create a fair balance of power, a political strategy Madara Uchiha opposes. As Madara predicts, the Tailed Beasts are quickly perverted into political tools for the nations to dominate each other, sparking the First Great Ninja War. Tobirama Senju carries on his brother's fight against the Uchihas as the Second Hokage before dying in the First Great Ninja War, but not before taking steps to secure the future of the Hidden Leaf Village.

During his time as Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju helps establish the Uchiha as the Military Police Force of the Hidden Village. Assigning the Uchiha Clan as the protectors of the village is postured as a move to empower them as allies, but instead creates resentment because the police station is strategically located in an isolated spot. The alienating arrangement intensifies tensions between the two clans, threatening to climax in a civil war as Sarutobi Hiruzen is appointed Third Hokage, snubbing the Uchihas of an opportunity at leadership yet again.

The Third Great Ninja War Sets the Stage for the Modern Shinobi World

The Second Great Ninja War is quickly followed by the Third Great Ninja War, which shapes the modern Shinobi world where the events of Naruto occur. Obito Uchiha is a young Genin presumed dead after his comrade Kakashi Hatake, who receives Obito's remaining Sharingan eye as a gift, is forced to leave Obito behind once half of his body is crushed by a boulder. The historical resentment toward the Hidden Leaf Village continues to simmer when the Third Hokage fails to consider an Uchiha to appoint as his successor, naming his pupil Minato Namikaze the Fourth Hokage instead.

Wicked Eye Fugaku is the father of Itachi and Sasuke, who become two of the Uchiha Clan's most notable figures. Itachi recruits his friend, Shisui Uchiha, to coerce the Hidden Leaf using his Kotoamatsukami. Shisui loses one of his eyes before he can manipulate the council, but still helps Itachi awaken the Mangekyo Sharingan by drowning himself in the Naku River to subject his friend to the suffering needed to manifest the ability. Itachi Uchiha agrees to slaughter his fellow clan members — except for his younger brother Sasuke — to prevent his father from inciting war. Everything changes when Itachi coincidentally crosses paths with Obito who agrees to help him murder the Uchiha Clan, permanently staggering the bloodline.

Only a few Uchihas live on after Obito and Itachi slaughter most of the bloodline, but all Uchihas who remain or reappear play a role in the Fourth Great Ninja War. Obito furthers Madara's plan for domination as Itachi unravels their secret conspiracy from within the Akatsuki. After Hagoromo Otsutsuki creates the Uchiha bloodline, Tajima Uchiha becomes the first known member of the clan. Tajima becomes a father to at least five sons, but only Madara and Izuna live to become notable figures after their three brothers die in battle. Madara Uchiha is set on a dark path after his younger brother, Izuna, is murdered by the rival Senju Clan. The lineage directly succeeding Madara is a mystery, but all future Uchihas can be traced back to him as their clan's progenitor.

Yakumi is another member of the Military Police Force, though his presence has less influence over the series than the other two named Uchihas seen during Fugaku's era. Teyaki and Uruchi are an Uchiha couple who run a bakery and have a minor influence on Fugaku's youngest son, Sasuke. The pair encourages Sasuke to continue his pursuits as a Shinobi free from the standards set by his older brother, Itachi. Sasuke is the only surviving Uchiha in the Hidden Leaf Village after Itachi and Obito kill the rest of the Uchiha Clan.
