The category of Latin dances in the international dancesport competitions consists of the Cha-cha-cha, Rumba, Samba, Paso Doble, and Jive. Social Latin dances (Street Latin) include salsa, mambo, merengue, rumba, bachata, bomba and plena.

Dancesport offers numerous advantages. Among them are enhanced mental well-being, strengthened social connections, improved physical fitness, and a platform for personal expression and creativity.

The Special Olympics DanceSport Competition is held in a theatrical setting. The Dancers perform on a stage with the audience on one side only. The dancefloor on stage must be a wooden floor with a minimum size of 8m x 8m. Measurement need to be communicated to all competitors.

DanceSport is now recognised by the International Olympic Committee as a sport for eventual inclusion in the Olympic program. The sport, which is based on the urban dance style from the US, is the only new entry in this year's Games - with karate, softball and baseball all removed after being added to the roster for Tokyo 2020.

Ballroom dancing is not classified by the IOC as an Olympic sport. Of course, the IOC could declare it as such if they so wanted. Synchronized swimming is a form of dance, and it is an Olympic sport. It is also an art form.
